Travel Itinerary
Day 1: Mekele to Erta Ale Volcano
Drive through dramatic landscapes of solidified lava and sand to Dodom at the base of Erta Ale. After dinner, begin a night trek to the volcano’s rim. Spend the night at the summit watching the boiling lava of the world’s longest-existing permanent lava lake.
Day 2: Erta Ale to Lake Afrera & Hamed Ela
Watch the sunrise over the caldera before descending to the base. Drive to the salt-water Lake Afrera (Lake Giulietti) to see the salt flats. Continue through the desert to the village of Hamed Ela for your overnight camp.
Day 3: Dallol & Salt Mines to Mekele
Visit the Ragad salt mines to see workers traditionally cutting salt blocks for camel caravans. Explore the colorful hydrothermal landscapes of Dallol and Lake Assal before driving back to Mekele to conclude the tour.
